Annotations

1. Composition and Publication

Almost nothing is known about the composition of the song Am Meer. In the course of its posthumous publication by Johann Christian Glücklich, he informed the publisher Breitkopf & Härtel that Reger had set his poem in 1894 and had given him the manuscript.1 It is not known whether there was any intention of publishing the piece at that time. At any rate, in 1909 Glücklich considered publication (ultimately not realised), which Reger agreed to on the condition that “addendum: comp. 1894” (Reger’s postcard dated 17 June 1909) was added. The frontispiece of the (future) first edition was probably designed in this context, bearing the date of the poet’s 70th birthday (30 July 1909). In the third edition of Glücklich’s volume of poetry Lose Blätter, published in 1909, which contains this poem, Reger’s setting is mentioned. In fact, it was only published after Reger’s death. On 3 June 1916 Glücklich offered the song, complete with frontispiece, to Breitkopf & Härtel for publication. On 14 August the publisher sent the proofs to Glücklich, at the same time returning the manuscript and frontispiece design. 100 complimentary copies followed on 25 August 1916.2
