Annotations

1. Composition and Publication

Hardly anything is known about the composition of In verschwiegener Nacht WoO VII/20 to a text by Anna Ritter. The song was probably written, like the Wiegenlied WoO VII/19, in the first half of 1899, and was published in June in the music and literature periodical Die Redenden Künste. This was where Reger’s output had been the subject of a detailed assessment in November 1898 by Caesar Hochstetter. Like the Wiegenlied, In verschwiegener Nacht WoO VII/20 was also dedicated to Elsa von Bercken, whom Reger had already honored in 1898 in the first of the Four Songs op. 23.1 In the light of later events, this served as an announcement of Reger’s (initially unsuccessful) courtship in June/July of the same year.2

1
Reger had already dedicated the first copy of the Two Sacred Songs op. 19 dated 29 April 1898 (Meininger Museen [Max-Reger-Archiv], Inventory number XI-1 4392 / Nhs.) to Elsa von Bercken, but in the engraver’s copy and the first printed edition this is no longer present. It is not clear why the dedication was ultimately not included.
2
And for the ten love songs, which were to form the basis of opp. 35 and 37 after Elsa von Bercken’s rejection, his future wife was intended as the dedicatee.

1. Reception
